fear disposal

i have these old fears which i don’t really have much use for anymore, and i’ve been thinking about what is the best way to really really really get rid of them.
rob has a suggestion:
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Will the truth set you free? Maybe, but first it will set you on fire, metaphorically speaking. Once you have been completely consumed by the flames and been reborn out of the ashes like the mythical phoenix, *then* you might be able to figure out how to use the truth to set yourself free–and to set others free as well. As long as you’re armed with the knowledge in this horoscope, Libra, the process won’t hurt as much as you might imagine. In fact, the predominant sensation may be exultation. Here’s some homework to get you started: Write your three top fears on a piece of paper and burn it.
what are some other ideas for dropping baggage you’re really tired of?

my uncle, who is very eastern in his religious mindset, told me when he’s got something to “get rid of” he writes it in permanent marker on a sheet of toilet paper, and then just flushes it down.
something about sending those kinds of thoughts where they belong.
i have personally witnessed a couple of “burnings,” and participated in one. it was refreshing to take pieces of my life that i had no more use for–that were harming my ability to move forward–and turn them into so much ash. after we burned all the letters, photos and other stuff over the process of an entire night (getting pretty well drunk as well) we took the bucket of ashes and dumped it into the wind in the first light of dawn.
we were covered in soot, but like the smell of paper and wood, it came off with a hot shower and a good nap. cathartic. it’s good.

Sorry to be a downer, but I don’t think you can ever really get rid of old baggage. My theory is you just embrace it and turn it into something interesting – like art. Or possibly an alcohol binge. Either will do.

you know, i’ve done some burnings and they have been cathartic. maybe i need to be a little more specific about just what it is i’m getting rid of!
certainly i don’t expect to never have a thought about the baggage again, but there are thoughts and habits which have come to the end of their usefulness. i’m ready to put all that energy into something more creative and less destructive, and i don’t just mean art.
but, thanks to both of you for the suggestions. i think maybe i’ll keep jenni_fred’s uncle’s idea handy for the next burning man. … no flush toilets, it’s all porta-potties. how much more brilliant to know the whole community is ‘commenting’ on my unwanted quirks.
